Samara Foundation

The ECD centres are located in very poor communities where households have little income opportunities. The Stitches of Hope project allows women to earn an additional income and to develop their skills.

Stitches of Hope

The teachers are taught how to make their own soft toys for their centres and are supported with material to continue making their own toys for their centres. Samara also draws on the handwork skills that exist in the communities and encourages local women to make resources – such as woollen blankets – that can be used at the ECD centres. The immediate aim of this is to provide these women with an outlet for their work and an opportunity to earn some additional income. The long term aim of the Stitches of Hope project is to develop the skills and self-confidence of these women and give them an opportunity to sell their products on a larger scale.
